Founder & General Contractor
John Pelland, our founder, has over 35 years of experience in both residential and commercial construction. He began his construction career while earning a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in Professional Accountancy from Walsh College, working across many trades including framing, concrete, electrical, plumbing, trim carpentry, and painting.
After a brief accounting career, John founded Lakestates Building Company in Michigan, then moved to Florida in 2005 to start Accent Construction & Remodeling LLC. Over the past 20 years he has been directly involved in numerous custom home builds, major home and condo renovations, kitchen and bath remodels, and light commercial projects throughout SWFL from Marco Island to Sarasota.
John is directly involved in every project, big and small. His extensive knowledge of all the trades combined with a strong accounting background lets him provide customers with realistic budgets and timelines to get the project completed.
Many people ask what our cost per square foot is to build. We usually cannot answer that until we know much more about what you want to build, how it will be built, lot-specific details, and location. With that information we can calculate a current cost to build, and we pride ourselves on giving customers accurate, honest pricing from the start.
For most custom homes and projects under $1.5 million, we use fixed cost contracts with certain allowances for specific items, so you know your numbers up front.
For most projects over $1.5 million and more complex builds, we use cost-plus contracts. There are pros and cons to both contract types, and we are happy to discuss them with every client.
We guarantee to complete our work within the timeframe set in every contract. If we do not finish within that timeframe, we deduct our self-imposed penalty, usually a per-day amount, from the final contract payment.
